The Northern Forest
by: Miss Barb's Class

Friends in Miss Barb's class returned
to school one Tuesday to find a forest corner in their room! Miss Patti and
Miss Barb had drilled and stuffed branches to build a pine and a
maple tree. They looked pretty neat!

Our maple tree has branches that reach high into the sky. The leaves are green and have points, but they are not sharp.

Our pine tree graces the front of the
room and is home to an owl. We know
it is a pine tree because it has leaves
that are needles and pine cones.
We painted the trunks as a group art project.
Each class painted maple leaves with karo syrup
and food color. We made owl baby and
camping pictures, and painted pictures of
trees using pine branches as paintbrushes.
A Dora tree house snuggles under
the branches for a quiet reading
place during center time.
Our friends have enjoyed choosing
this center and they have exhibited
nice sharing and
quiet reading habits.
Wednesday we discovered that our maple tree had been tapped. There is a stile with a bucket to catch the sap that turns into yummy maple syrup. Friends were very surprised to come back on Thursday and find syrup in our bucket.
Thursday we gathered together in
a circle and built our very own
classroom campfire. We kept warm
as we reviewed all the letters and
sounds we have been working on.
We talked about how syrup is made
and all the places we like to put maple syrup. Some of us like to put it on pancakes, waffles, French toast and
even our own fingers!
